Our Story

Larkwell started with a broken clip on a wet Tuesday.

A plated zinc snap hook let go halfway down a beach path. The dog was fine. The lead - eleven months old, bought for what felt like a fair price - went in the bin, and the third one that year went in after it.

That is the whole problem with dog gear. It is designed to a price and a season. Moulded plastic where there should be metal. Printed nylon where there should be hide. A failure point built in so you come back next spring.

What we do instead

We make dog gear the way saddlery has been made for two hundred years, because nobody has improved on it.

• Vegetable-tanned full-grain hide. The top grain left intact, tanned with tree bark rather than chrome salts. It softens against the neck instead of cracking, and it darkens into something better looking than the day it arrived.
• Hand saddle-stitch. Two needles, one waxed linen thread, every stitch locked. Cut one and the seam holds. Machine lockstitch unravels from a single break.
• Solid antique brass. Cast, not plated. Welded D-rings, screw-lock snaps. Brass takes on a patina; plated zinc flakes down to grey and then to rust.

None of this is clever. It is just the expensive way, done on purpose.

Who we are

Larkwell is a small operation run by Robin Rattasep. Not a warehouse, not a team of forty - one person who answers the emails, checks the engraving before it ships, and reads every complaint personally.

Our leather and hardware come from workshops that have been making bridles and harness long before anyone thought to make them for dogs. We do not pretend the stitching happens in a shed behind the house. It happens where it has always happened, by people who do it every day.

Where we ship

Everywhere. Larkwell has no home market and no local branch - orders go out to the same address list whether you are in Berlin, Toronto, Manila or anywhere else a courier reaches. Free, worldwide, on every order.

What we promise

• Every collar, lead and set is engraved free. No upsell, no personalisation fee.
• Hardware and stitching are guaranteed for two years. If a stitch line fails or a brass fitting breaks in normal use, we repair or replace it. You do not need the receipt - we can find the order.
• Free shipping worldwide, typically 5-9 business days, and we tell you the real transit time rather than the one that sounds best.
• Thirty days to change your mind on anything unengraved.

What we are still working on

We are new. There are no reviews on this site yet because we would rather have none than buy them. If you order early and something is not right, tell us and we will fix it - that is worth more to us than the sale.

The name

A larkwell is an old word for the hollow a skylark presses into a field to nest in. Small, well made, and exactly the right shape for the animal that uses it. It seemed about right.
